Many people ignore Graphic Novels because the association with “comic books” brings up images of the Sunday Funnies.  However, this burgeoning art form has much to teach the literary world.  The Sandman is, in my opinion, the finest example of graphic novels as “Literature”.  It’s dark, deep, and definitely not “just a kid’s book”.
