Our Thoughts, News & Updates

Our Very Own Little Free Library

You may have heard rumblings about the brilliance that is Little Free Library - a literary movement that is sweeping the nation.

What is a Little Free Library?
It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share.

This week, Dolly’s connected with The Perusing Moose, otherwise known as Summit County’s very own Little Free Library. Upon learning of this great little space–Dolly’s donated a few of our young adult titles to build up the communal inventory [see our very own Nat on the Perusing Moose Instagram].

The Lies of Locke Lamora

By Scott Lynch

“An orphan’s life is harsh–and often short–in the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges death and slavery, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentleman Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld’s most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal game–or die trying.”

Amazon vs. Hachette

Many of you may have noticed through blog posts here, or on Dolly’s Facebook page, that there has been a lot of rumblings out in the media concerning Amazon and a company called Hachette. People like Stephen Colbert, James Patterson, and Sherman Alexie have been speaking out, and we’d like you all to know why this issue is so close to our hearts as well.

The Los Angeles Times has put together a helpful article to bullet-point what you should know, detailing what the problems are and what they may mean for the future of publishing, bookstores, and books in general.  Please take the time to glance them over here.

Another Reason to Buy Local!!

Some of you may know that independent book stores across the nation have been suffering, as well as even the big-name chains! And people are starting to notice! See who’s speaking out and what they’ve been saying!

patterson“The press doesn’t seem to consider this newsworthy, but there is a war going on between Amazon and book publishers. This war involves money of course, and though I have an opinion, I’m not here to comment on what might be a fair and reasonable settlement….”    James Patterson  (Read More)

Authors Need to Back Bookstores

“Whenever I enter a local bookshop I know something is going to happen.

It will involve a book, of course. But it will also involve a ritual of a kind, a process of choosing. I’ll leave with something I didn’t have before and that is exciting….”   (Read More)

Another Reason to Buy Local

“Amazon likes to remind us regularly why independent booksellers are to be treasured and supported. The behemoth did it again last week, when its efforts to bully a major publisher into granting it better terms became public. Many books published by Hachette, one of the “big five” U.S. publishers, are now being listed as available only in a few weeks, sometimes up to five or six weeks–an eternity in today’s fast-paced world and in effect a delisting. This artificial scarcity is a cynical effort to punish Hachette by choking sales…”    Shelf Awareness  (Read More)

We at Dolly’s would like to thank you all for your continued support, and for educating yourselves on issues that affect your local businesses!  Cat BoxAnd remember, buying local keeps your dollars local!
