The Gilder

Tuesday, January 10th, 7:00PM

Art restorer Marina Nesmith’s life seems flawless, at least on the surface. But more and more, Marina is conscious of what she lacks – most especially, the courage to tell her teenage daughter, Zoe, the truth about her father. Then Marina is invited to return to Florence, where she learned her trade as a gilder years ago. In those heady days, she wandered the city’s picturesque streets and struck up a friendship with Thomas, an American photographer. He and his wife, Sarah, introduced Marina to a thrilling, bohemian world of art and beauty. Through them, she also learned about love, lies, and the way one mistake can multiply into many. Now, as past and present collide, Marina must move beyond the intricate veneer she’s crafted around herself and find the life that she – and Zoe – have been looking for.

JANUARY BOOK CLUB MASH-UP

The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Tuesday, January 10th, 7:00PM

We’re taking a look at two books that deal with teen angst this month and doing a comparison:

The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger was published in 1951 and has probably been on every High School’s reading list ever since, as well as multiple Banned Books lists every year as well. The book’s hero, Holden Caufield, has just been expelled from another school and spends three days of loneliness, fear and anger in New York City before heading home.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Chbosky was published in 1999 by MTV (don’t hold that against it) and is scheduled to come out as a movie in 2012 (again, hold judgement). Written as a series of letter by the hero, Charlie, Perks also uses the themes of teenage introversion and awkwardness. Chbosky references Catcher as inspiration for this novel.

Everyone is welcome to join us and refreshments will be served!

Check out our discussion questions for the book as well as future book club titles!
